Petroleum refining
In Portugal, the sub-sector Petroleum refining (part of Energy) was responsible for 1.76 Mt CO₂eq of emissions in the year 2021, which is 3.2% of total emissions in that year. Compared to 1990 (1.87 Mt CO₂eq), emissions have decreased by 5.9%. Under existing measures, emissions are projected to reach 0.37 Mt CO₂eq by 2050.
What is part of this sector? Emissions from the refining of crude oil by oil refineries. Emissions arise from the combustion of fuels, flaring and thermal cracking.
