In Portugal, the sub-sector Waste Water Treatment and Discharge (part of Waste) was responsible for 0.94 Mt CO₂eq of emissions in the year 2021, which is 1.7% of total emissions in that year. Compared to 1990 (1.88 Mt CO₂eq), emissions have decreased by 50%. Under existing measures, emissions are projected to reach 0.69 Mt CO₂eq by 2050.
